TLC Advisory Committee on AI in Teaching and Learning

Overview

In spring 2025, the TLC Advisory Committee on AI in Teaching and Learning was established by the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL) to monitor, discuss, and evaluate the many expected changes artificial intelligence (AI) will bring to the educational and pedagogical landscape at UCLA. The committee will provide guidance informed by research, emerging policies, ethical considerations, and best practices while building off the recommendations provided to the VPTL in spring 2024 by the Ad Hoc Committee for Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Learning (see report). The committee is co-chaired by Chris Mattmann, Inaugural Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer for Office of the CIO, and Kem Saichaie, Inaugural Executive Director of the Teaching and Learning Center.

In the spirit of the ad hoc committee’s report, the Advisory Committee recognizes the potential of AI as part of a larger ecosystem of technological tools designed to enhance teaching and learning while remaining attentive to and exploring concerns about accessibility, academic integrity, educational quality, technological bias, and environmental impacts. The Committee will advise the prioritization of future resources (including grant funding), programs, services, and initiatives spearheaded by the UCLA Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) to establish a robust support model for all UCLA instructors, including Teaching Assistants, and the students they serve.
