On Wednesday, April 23, the Teaching and Learning Center Student Experiences of Teaching shared this message via Bruin Post.
Courses in the School of Theater, Film and Television; David Geffen School of Medicine; School of Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; Luskin School of Public Affairs; School of Nursing; and School of Education and Information Sciences are moving to the new Student Experiences of Teaching (SET) survey platform — Blue.
This quarter, several departments’ Student Experiences of Teaching (SET) surveys will transition to Blue, our new platform. Information about this transition was shared in a BruinPost from Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning Erin Sanders O’Leary last quarter. Below are key updates regarding the process and important changes to note.
Survey Invitations and Access
- You will receive an automated email from the TLC SET program with a link to monitor response rates for your course on Blue.
- You can also access the link through your course website on Bruin Learn.
- You will be able to see the percentage of students who have completed the survey for each course that you are teaching, but you will not be able to see individual completion information.
- Students will receive an automated email from the TLC SET program with instructions for completing their surveys on Blue. They can access their surveys via Bruin Learn.
Managing Survey Reports Across Platforms
- If you or your TAs are teaching courses in departments or subject areas in the Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences or the Fielding School of Public Health, your students may be completing surveys in both the new (Blue) and old (MyUCLA) systems this quarter.
- Please clearly communicate to your students which platform to use for their SET surveys.
Survey Reports and Access
- Instructors and teaching assistants can access their individual reports after the survey period is closed and one to two days after final grades have been submitted.
- You will receive an automated email from the TLC SET program with a link to view your survey report on Blue once they are available.
Gradebook Integration
- Some instructors offer participation points for completing SET surveys. While Blue is not yet integrated with Gradebook, we are working with the Bruin Learn Center of Excellence to add this functionality.
- If you plan to offer credit for individual survey completion, please complete the SET Participation Roster Request Form by June 17. Once the survey period ends, we will provide a report indicating which students have completed their surveys.
- To maintain student anonymity, reports will only be provided if there are at least 10 responses. Reports will indicate completion status only — all responses will remain anonymous.
To encourage participation, you may consider offering participation points or extra credit if the entire class meets or exceeds a target response rate. You can monitor response rates at any time through your Blue dashboard.
