We look forward to seeing you at one of our November events. This month, we also have some election resources for instructors and information about the OpenAI call for proposals.

ID Showcase: Peer Review using Peerceptiv in LS7L
Our next Instructional Design Showcase features Rachel Sauvageot, who will discuss the implementation of peer review grading and the Peerceptiv tool in LS 7L. Join us Thursday, November 21 at 10 a.m. on Zoom, to learn how Peerceptiv was implemented in a high enrollment introductory biology lab course with a substantial writing component (3 scientific research papers over the quarter). The course shifted from TA-graded assignments to peer review grading in 2017, and has seen multiple benefits including increased student engagement and reduced TA grading time. The showcase will feature an overview of the instructional team’s experience using peer review in a high-enrollment biology course and their experience with Peerceptiv over the last year.

Winter Designing Your Online Course Workshop
TLC’s Instructional Design and Media Production team will host a winter Designing Your Online Course workshop that explores effective online instructional practices. The workshop helps instructors design a creative course grounded in best practices for online instruction, that is accessible to all learners, and incorporates principles of equity and inclusion.
There will be six live sessions where you will join colleagues and the design team to discuss course design strategies. The workshop includes weekly activities, and module deadlines can accommodate travel and research commitments. You will also be assigned an instructional designer to work with you during and after the workshop to develop and launch your course.
The workshop runs from January 20 through February 28, with weekly Zoom meetings. Applications are due December 16, and will be available November 15.
Email Kate Schaller at kschaller@teaching.ucla.edu for more information and to receive the workshop application form when it opens.
Election Resources
The TLC has developed a resource for instructors that provides guidance for addressing the election in the classroom and includes specific language for facilitating or deferring such conversations. The goal is for instructors to feel more equipped to navigate the current political landscape with confidence and sensitivity. An election resources section has also been added to our Maintaining Instructional Continuity webpage where forthcoming resources will be available.
Call for OpenAI Project Proposals
As part of UCLA’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative, students, faculty, and staff now have access to Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini. ITS has also launched a call for proposals, initially targeting IT Services and IT Strategic Partners. The next phase started on November 1 and has opened participation to all faculty, students, staff, and researchers. More details can be found on the Generative AI website.
