New Resources to Support Instructor Well-being

The new calendar year and quarter have already been filled with loss, frustration, and concern for many Bruins and members of the larger Los Angeles community. We are heartbroken at the devastation and pain experienced in two short weeks. This upcoming week holds mixed feelings for many as the country marks a new presidential administration. The TLC recognizes that challenging times do not stop at the doors of our classrooms or edges of our Zoom screens. This is why we will continue to provide additional resources and support to instructors as we navigate the uncertainty that lies ahead.

Please prioritize your safety and well-being. Our team is available for consultations to address specific issues related to teaching during this challenging time.

If you are able to and would like to help those affected by the wildfires, UCLA Newsroom has compiled a list of ways you can help.

Instructor Well-being: New Resources Added

The TLC has updated our maintaining instructional continuity page to provide guidance and support to instructors who may be facing personal struggles while managing their courses during this challenging time. These new materials answer common questions related to returning to campus following the devastating wildfires that recently impacted our community, and offer guidance to support instructors through the uncertainty presented by the incoming presidential administration. This includes tips for managing difficult classroom conversations, resources for those most impacted by anticipated federal policies, and slides instructors can use to communicate with their students.

Spaces for Delivering or Recording Lectures

UCLA has multimedia recording spaces across campus for recording audio and video lectures. You can also record in UCLA classrooms using BruinCast or Zoom, where available, or record on Zoom from a personal computer. Additionally, the TLC has office spaces where instructors can record content using Zoom or work on course content. To check availability, contact: rooms@teaching.ucla.edu. The UCLA Library offers equipment lending and may be able to assist instructors who have lost access to personal computing devices.

Rescheduled: Assisting Distressed and Distressing Students

1–2 p.m., Wednesday, February 5 | Hosted on Zoom

Due to the extensive impact of the wildfires across the Los Angeles region and on our UCLA community, this event was rescheduled from its original January date and expanded to be available to all instructors and teaching assistants.

Karen Minero (Case Management Services) will present about how to identify students in need of assistance; what resources are available to students; how to approach students in distress and assist them in getting connected with resources; emergency procedures; and how to reach professional staff for consultation regarding distressed or distressing students. This training was co-created by CAPS/RISE and Case Management Services. All instructors, TAs, postdocs, and instructional support staff are welcome to attend.
