About Us

The TLC empowers educators as they elevate their teaching and the student learning experience at UCLA. We champion leadership in teaching and learning through pedagogical research initiatives, continuous improvement, training, resources, and fostering learning communities.

Vision

The TLC is creating a campus culture that champions learning-centered, engaging, equity-minded, and data-driven instruction; values and celebrates visionary, reflective, and effective educators and pedagogical research scholars; and elevates inclusive excellence in teaching and educational innovation at UCLA and beyond.

Mission

The mission of the TLC is to bring together a campus wide community of educators, support their well-being, equip them with the instructional skills and pedagogical knowledge to elevate their teaching, and further inspire an enduring commitment to student success. The TLC approaches this work by:

  • Engaging practitioners in inclusive, effective, and reflective teaching practices
  • Advancing innovative and engaging instructional approaches across disciplines in coordination with campus partners
  • Championing technology-enhanced, student-centered, and accessible curricular design
  • Leveraging the science of learning and institutional data informed by the identities and lived experiences of UCLA students and instructors
  • Promoting collaborative, pioneering educational initiatives and transformative, multidisciplinary pedagogical research

Goals

Deliver programs

Deliver a suite of programs, services, and resources that support individuals and departments in adopting student-centered, equitable, and effective teaching and assessment practices.

Engage Campus Stakeholders

Inform the inclusive design of programming by engaging campus stakeholders in ways that listen to and elevate all voices, perspectives, and lived experiences—especially those historically marginalized in higher education.

Empower Instructors

Empower instructors to leverage an ecosystem of academic technology and modernized learning spaces to enhance student engagement and learning in both in-person and digital learning environments.

Sustain Innovation

Sustain innovation in teaching and curriculum through scaffolded learning paths that incorporate peer-to-peer mentoring, train-the-trainer programs, and communities of practice.

Connect communities

Connect communities of educators and educational leaders who value high-quality, inclusive and reflective teaching, advocate for instructional transformation, and drive cultural change affecting teaching and learning across the institution.

Advance scholarship

Advance the scholarship of teaching and learning by building campus capacity to conduct and disseminate pedagogical research and broadening participation in iterative, inquiry-based instructional improvement.

Incentivize instructors

Incentivize, showcase, and reward instructor and departmental engagement in educational activities that benefit the UCLA teaching enterprise from the undergraduate to graduate and professional student levels.

Model continuous improvement

Model and support a campuswide culture of continuous improvement and programmatic efficacy in education through data-informed decision-making and a commitment to evaluate and share TLC impact and effectiveness.

Lead among peers

Position the TLC as a leader in teaching and learning by engaging in collaborations, projects, and initiatives at the campus, UC system, and national levels.
