What to Expect in this Showcase

In GERMAN 1, the instructor has successfully applied UDL principles in the course design and created several student “Action & Expression” (UDL) activities in Bruin Learn,

  • Using Discussion Forum – students wrote up blog entries in German about themselves with photos and responded in German to the blog posts of others
  • Using Assignment – student pairs uploaded a video of a partner assignment conducted in German (interview, conversation as directed by the instructor)
  • Using Assignment – students each uploaded a book review (summative assessment);  instructor video (Kaltura), task guidelines, and a model/example were provided in German, along with a rubric that guided expectations, quality, and grading
  • Using a Quiz survey – students provided confidential feedback about their (getting started) learning experience 

Faculty Bio

Dr. Magdalena “Magda” Tarnawska Senel is the Director of the German Language Program and Lecturer at the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies at UCLA. Her research focuses on teaching languages and humanities for social justice.
