AI Literacy Student Module

The UCLA Teaching and Learning Center has developed a short AI Literacy Module for students hosted in Bruin Learn. It provides a shared baseline for AI literacy that instructors can adapt within their own courses while preserving flexibility for different disciplinary, pedagogical, and policy contexts. The module helps students understand core AI literacy concepts and instructors communicate course-specific expectations more clearly.

Module Content

The AI Literacy Module guides students in understanding what tasks AI does well, where students should be cautious in using it, how course-specific expectations may vary, and how to use AI responsibly in academic work. It ends with a brief quiz and acknowledgement regarding the student’s responsibility to follow instructor-specific AI rules. It takes no more than 30 minutes to complete.

There is also a section for instructors where they can provide specific policies for AI use on assignments, including disclosure requirements and students’ responsibility for their work. 

Module Learning Outcomes

By the end, students will be able to:

  • Define generative AI (GenAI).
  • Describe the strengths and limitations of GenAI as a learning tool.
  • Identify risks and ethical concerns around using GenAI technologies.
  • Describe where to find GenAI tools available at UCLA and related resources.
  • Determine appropriate uses of GenAI for coursework in alignment with UCLA student code of conduct and data privacy policies.

Accessing the Module

To add the AI Literacy Module to a Bruin Learn course:

  1. Log in to Bruin Learn and open the course where you would like to use the module.
  2. Select “Import from Commons” from your course home page. You can also access Commons from the main Bruin Learn navigation.
  3. In Canvas Commons, select “Filter,” then limit the results to only show UCLA resources, and search for “TLC AI Literacy Module v1.”
  4. Open the module and select “Import/Download.”
  5. Select the Bruin Learn course where you would like the module added, then select Import into Course.
  6. Return to your course and open Modules. The AI Literacy Module will appear as a new module in your course.

 

Before making the module available to students:

  1. Review the imported module and its activities.
  2. Optional: open “Custom AI Policies [by Instructor]” and select Edit to add your own course-specific expectations for AI use, disclosure, or assignments.
  3. Review the module’s completion and grading settings and adjust them if needed for your course.
  4. When you are ready for students to access the module, publish the module and its contents.

 

Grading considerations:

The module includes completion activities and a knowledge check. After importing the module, review the associated grading settings and adjust them as needed for your course.

Updates:

The TLC may periodically update the AI Literacy Module in Canvas Commons. Updates are not automatically applied to modules already imported into a course. Instructors can review available updates in Canvas Commons and choose whether to apply them.
