General Assignment Classroom Modernization
This collaborative pilot project brings upgraded spaces equipped with next-gen technology that is intended to aid instructor teaching practices and support the learning needs of every student.
Overview
The General Assignment Classroom Modernization Pilot Project is a collaboration between the TLC, Digital & Technology Solutions (DTS), and Facilities Management (FM) to bring 21st century learning environments to UCLA that support student-centered teaching practices and bolster educational innovation. Improving classroom technology and infrastructure in order to elevate excellent teaching for all students is outlined in the UCLA for Life flagship initiative, a part of Chancellor Julio Frenk’s One UCLA campaign, and outlined as Goal 4 of the UCLA Strategic Plan.
The six classrooms that received upgrades during Summer 2025 as part of the first phase of the Classroom Modernization Pilot include:
- Kaplan A26
- Kaplan A40
- Kaplan A48
- Kaplan A65
- Physics and Astronomy Building (PAB) 1749
- PAB 2434
**Two additional classrooms received upgrades during the summer — Franz 1178 and Boelter Hall 2760.
Upgrades include AV technology updates to support flexible course modalities, including hybrid class sessions, as well as lecture capture, multiple displays, and more accessibility support systems. Facilities enhancements include movable furniture that supports various teaching practices, along with improved lighting, sight lines, acoustics, and energy-efficient equipment.

Ad Hoc Committee on Learning Spaces Pedagogy
The TLC’s ad hoc Committee on Learning Space Pedagogy (LSP) was formed in late summer 2024 to address and offer a pedagogical perspective on an identified priority in the UCLA 2023-2028 Strategic Plan: “Modernize learning spaces to enrich student success and keep pace with innovative teaching practices.” The Committee officially sunsetted on July 1, 2025 and crafted recommendations included in their final report.
