The following information was previously included in a January 2025 Teaching Bulletin created by the Teaching and Learning Center.
The Trump administration has rolled back protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, with a particular focus on reversing the rights of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people. This has included several executive orders targeting federal anti-discrimination protections for transgender and nonbinary people, banning transgender people from serving in the armed forces, as well as litigation by the Department of Justice against schools and universities for allowing transgender athletes to participate on sports teams. Instructors who identify as trans or gender nonconforming may therefore be concerned about their rights under the administration.
UCLA and the University of California system maintain their commitment to diversity and inclusivity. To that end, UCLA upholds its gender-inclusive facilities policy and recognizes individuals’ gender identity. Navigating how you show up during this time may feel challenging, but you are not alone. We encourage you to contact the UCLA LGBTQ Resource Center, which provides support for students and staff. See the list below for other ways to support your mental health and wellbeing.
As federal policy changes and announcements are ongoing, the UC Office of the President and UCLA have created federal updates pages containing the latest guidance and information.
