Teaching is a vital component of the critical work we do at UCLA, and our instructional community continues to show up for students during these challenging times. The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) has tailored resources for instructors, TAs and postdocs, and departments, as well as guidance and programs to support your wellbeing. Though we don’t know what may come during the fall quarter, we are here to assist with your preparations for this upcoming academic year.

Efficient Grading

walks through strategies and tools that streamline the grading process and allow instructors to be attentive to student needs while also protecting their time.

Teaching Online Sections as a TA

provides guidance on how TAs can use active learning techniques in Zoom and cultivate a strong sense of “online presence” through Bruin Learn to create effective learning experiences for students. 

Using Gradescope

provides an overview of the ways instructors and TAs can use Gradescope to grade various types of assignments more efficiently and consistently.

Making your Course Accessible

The TLC and additional campus partners are working to enhance our digital accessibility resources for instructors in alignment with UCLA and UC commitments to inclusive excellence. These guides cover various topics to offer detailed instructions on how to make digital materials accessible for the start of the quarter.

Educational Innovation Grants Now Accepting Applications

Tier 1 Seed Grants
Applications close October 31

Support small-scale, short-term projects that augment instruction. Instructors of record for undergraduate, graduate, and professional student courses at UCLA are eligible to request up to $1,000 per academic year. Learn more

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis within two instructional weeks of submission.

Tier 2 Sandbox Grants
Applications close October 31

Provide funding to support instructor-initiated projects that improve teaching practices and curriculum. Instructors of record for undergraduate, graduate, and professional student courses at UCLA are eligible to request up to $6,000 per academic year. Learn more

All applications will be scored together and those selected will received a notification of approval within two instructional weeks.

The TLC collaborates with instructors to support course development, student learning assessment, and classroom technologies to foster an engaging classroom experience. Schedule a meeting with the TLC staff.

Media Production

Whether recording a single lecture or an entire course, our Media Production team supports instructors in creating impactful multimedia content that helps students connect to course material. Learn more about our production process.

New Instructor Teaching Institute

The TLC welcomes all instructors, new and relatively new to UCLA, regardless of teaching experience, to the New Instructor Teaching Institute (NITI). This professional development event is designed to welcome you to UCLA by helping identify the TLC’s key resources and services as well as explore teaching frameworks to support all learners. You will also have the opportunity to build professional relationships with fellow instructors while gaining an understanding of UCLA’s institutional culture. Learn more

10 + 10 Pop-up Series

The TLC’s educational developers and designers offer a series of 10-minute pop-up sessions on course design, teaching, learning, and learning assessment topics—each followed by 10 minutes of Q&A and interactive audience discussion.
