On Wednesday, January 28, the Teaching and Learning Center Student Experiences of Teaching shared this message via BruinPost
Starting this quarter (Winter 2026), instructors will have the opportunity to personalize questions in their Student Experiences of Teaching (SET) surveys. As a reminder, UCLA uses Explorance Blue (also known as Blue) to conduct SET surveys. This message provides key updates regarding this new feature.
What is Question Personalization?
- Question personalization involves adding supplemental questions that instructors choose to include in the end-of-quarter student survey, in addition to the standard questions used by a department. The questions instructors add will appear on the survey for every student in the course.
- Before SET surveys are sent to students, instructors will have the opportunity to add up to five personalized questions from a bank of questions to their course surveys in Blue. This activity is referred to as Question Personalization (QP).
Why Personalize SET Survey Questions?
- Adding personalized questions to student surveys can provide additional insight into how to improve course materials or instructional strategies.
- Personalized questions can provide feedback about specific elements of your instruction, such as assignments or teaching strategies.
- If you choose to add supplemental questions to your courses, question personalization responses will only appear on your individual instructor reports. Personalized question data is solely for instructors to inform their own teaching practices.
Question Personalization Reminders and Access
- On February 2, you will receive an automated email from the TLC SET program with a link to personalize questions for your course(s) on Blue. You have until February 18 to complete this task.
- Between February 2 and February 18, you can also access question personalization through the tasks widget on your Blue homepage.
- If you do not complete the task by the deadline, students will only receive the standard SET questions used by your department.
- To opt out of question personalization, you do not need to do anything in Blue,
For a short, live demonstration on how to add personalized questions to your course surveys, please attend the 10 + 10 Pop-Up Series at 10 a.m. on February 10.
