Our Production Process
Our media production process is collaborative, goal-oriented, and flexible to support the creation of high-quality educational content meeting the needs of the UCLA instructional community. With expertise in TV, film, and animation, the TLC’s professional media team walks faculty, staff, and students through the process of developing engaging multimedia.
Our studios also feature top-tier equipment, including iPad Pro and customizable digital setups, for a seamless recording and editing experience. Following recording, our team offers comprehensive editing services to enhance and finalize the content.
Pre-Production Planning and Consultation
Every media project starts with an in-depth consultation to outline goals and determine production needs.
Our team is here to assist instructors from the start. When the media project is part of a TLC course design project, instructors will already have an instructional design partner who will bring in a media producer to help develop media for specific teaching goals. Our knowledgeable team can support home studio set-up, flipping lectures, or exploring best practices in multimedia development.
The Media Production team can also provide studio tours to assist in preparing for the recording process. During this stage, instructors can also explore training options to gain confidence with equipment and recording techniques.
Once goals are set, an instructional designer or media specialist will work closely with instructors to prepare for filming or other multimedia products, including the creation of scripts, slide decks, graphics, props, and other materials.
Professional Studio Recording and Editing
In collaboration with our media team, instructors can record professional-quality videos using one of our two on-site studios, CHS, Slichter, and the Push-Button Studio.
Ongoing Training and Support
Our team provides individual and group training on audio and video equipment, recording techniques, and multimedia best practices to instructors, staff, and students. This training ensures that each member of the UCLA community feels empowered to produce high-quality content that aligns with their instructional objectives.
Commitment to Quality in Media Production
We are committed to maintaining high standards across all stages of the media production process. Our quality assurance includes the following elements:
- Detailed Planning: Each project begins with a Statement of Work to clarify objectives, outline timelines, and establish clear deliverables.
- Quality Checkpoints: Throughout recording and editing, our team reviews the project to ensure it meets UCLA’s standards for educational media.
- Accessibility Standards: We ensure all media content is ADA-compliant, offering closed captioning, adherence to accessibility guidelines, and inclusive design for all UCLA students, instructors, and staff.
Policies and Scheduling
Instructors will commit to a timeline as outlined in our Statement of Work. Missing deadlines or last-minute cancellations will shift projects to the next production cycle. For revenue-generating projects, fees are based on time scheduled, with applicable cancellation fees included.
Our team will provide guidance and resources to ensure all media products are inclusive and high quality, including scripting and detailed edits. Instructors are responsible for copyright and reviewing captions to ensure accuracy.Captioning fees may be required for large projects.
