Quick Links for Departments
Programs, resources, and services to support academic departments at UCLA.
The UCLA Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) provides resources, services, and collaborative engagement opportunities for the campus instructional community to elevate teaching and foster an enduring commitment to student success. We work with academic departments on assessing student experiences and evaluating teaching to enhance the learning process, as well as help departments navigate training requirements for teaching assistants.
The TLC also offers professional learning programs — from one-time workshops to multi-day institutes — for educators working to implement effective teaching strategies and find opportunities to collaborate with colleagues. We collaborate with campus partners to facilitate longer-term engagements such as year-long communities of practice that advance instructor excellence on campus.
Programs
Distinguished Teaching Awards
These awards are UCLA’s highest recognition for teaching excellence and honor recipients under three classifications: senate faculty, non-senate faculty, and teaching assistants.
Holistic Evaluation of Teaching Initiative
This initiative is intended to help departments improve the way they evaluate teaching and help faculty implement excellent teaching practices while assisting instructors in showcasing their teaching expertise and new pedagogical approaches. HET is a way to think about and document teaching using self-reflection, student input, and peer review.
New Instructor Teaching Institute (NITI)
This annual two-day professional development event is designed to welcome instructors to UCLA by helping them identify the TLC’s key resources and services as well as explore teaching frameworks to support all learners.
TA Training
The TLC helps graduate students and departments navigate TA training requirements set by UCLA’s Graduate Council, which include enrollment in a 495 pedagogy course to satisfy basic pedagogy training and discipline-based training, and completion of Professional Standards and Ethics Training (PSET)
